Q: I am an author/illustrator. How can I write or illustrate for your magazines?
A:

We have different guidelines for each of our 14 magazines. Please check the author and/or illustrator guidelines for the magazine(s) that you are interested in before submitting a manuscript, illustration, or photo. Anything you submit will be considered on speculation. We assure you that every manuscript will be read and reviewed. All submissions are automatically considered for all our magazines. Guidelines are available on our site at Submission Guidelines.

Please be sure to send a self-addressed, stamped envelope with all submissions and sufficient postage for return of manuscript, if desired. Submissions without a SASE will not receive a reply. Submissions from outside the U.S. should include an International Postal Reply Coupon.

Q: I recently submitted an article, illustration, and/or photo to your magazine. How do I find out if my submission has been received or accepted for publication?
A:

All unsolicited manuscripts received by our editorial office are carefully read and reviewed by a staff of off-site preliminary readers. Manuscripts are boxed and shipped to them weekly, on a rotating schedule. Our normal manuscript turnaround, the time between our receipt of a submission and our response to the author, is six months. Rejected manuscripts are returned by the preliminary readers directly to the authors; recommended manuscripts are returned to the editorial offices for further consideration.

Because we receive so many manuscripts (over 1,000 each month!), it isn’t possible to keep files on everything we review. Permanent records are kept only on those submissions that have been accepted for publication. However, if your manuscript and self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) were mailed to us more than six months ago and you haven’t heard from us yet, you may wish to consider resubmitting. It isn’t unheard of for submissions to go astray in the mail. We do NOT accept submissions by e-mail or fax. Please note that it is our policy is to respond only to those authors who have provided a SASE. Submissions from outside the U.S. should include an International Postal Reply Coupon and a self-addressed envelope. The SASE must be provided with the submission. A SASE sent separately as an afterthought can’t be matched with a manuscript already in the review process, because we have no way of knowing which preliminary reader is reviewing the manuscript. Again, because of volume, we don’t keep records of which manuscripts are assigned to each preliminary reader. An author who fails to include a SASE with his or her manuscript will not hear from us if we can’t use the submission; we’ll contact that individual only if we are interested in publishing the manuscript.

Q: My child is interested in submitting stories, poems, and/or pictures to your magazines. How can she/he do that?
A:

We enjoy seeing pictures, stories, and poems by our young readers, but we don't publish unsolicited children's work in any of our magazines. Your child is welcome to send material to be posted on our site under "Your Turn." To protect your privacy, the web postings will show only child's first name, last initial, age, and state.

While we don't publish children's writing or art in the print version of LADYBUG®, we are happy to have children send entries to our monthly contests in SPIDER®, CRICKET®, ASK® or MUSE® magazines. Each month has a specific theme and deadline, so be sure to look at the current issue of the magazine before sending an entry.

In the case of these contests, winning and non-winning submissions may appear on our Web site. However only the entrant's first name, last initial, age, city, and state are listed under the entry. Any information collected through voluntary submissions is not sold, distributed, or transferred to any third party. Forum contributors have the option of remaining anonymous. For more information, please see COPPA.

When sending submission to any magazine, always include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you expect a reply.

There are some publications that do accept submissions from children. Please see our Submission Guidelines for more information. Also see our Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions for more information about submissions from children.

Q: I am a student and am interested in writing for your magazines. How can I do that?
A:

We do not accept any contributions from students other than the contests listed above. The specific theme and rules for each contest are found in the current copy of each magazine.

CICADA® magazine occasionally publishes writing or art from readers ages 14 and up. Submission guidelines are printed on the last page of each issue of CICADA. But CICADA is temporarily closed to submissions.

Listed below are publications that do publish student work. If you wish to contact them, be sure to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
